Italy Day Tours

The Great Italian Wine Estates

Italy boasts many of the world's finest and most beautiful wineries, many of which are open to the public. However, it's one thing to rent a car and drive out into the country, hoping to find the vintner at home. It's quite another to arrive expected, explore the winery with the vintner and a guide who know wines, enjoy a wine tasting and a delicious lunch, and visit other local points of interest.

A Grape Adventures guide will escort you to a premier wine estate in the different regions. En route, the guide will provide background information about the history of the area, its wines, and point out noteworthy sights. At the winery, tour members will enjoy a tour followed by a wine-tasting and have the opportunity to purchase wines, olive oils, honey, and other local products.

Chianti Classico

Area: Chianti Classico, the most famous of the seven subzones of the Chianti wine region, extends from Florence to Siena. The region is called Classico because it is the historic heart of the Chianti region. It is represented by the black rooster which appears on the wine bottles.

Wine: The Sangiovese grape of the Chianti wines are garnet-colored with moderate body and great finesse. It has a characteristic black cherry aroma with scents of wood smoke, tar and wild herbs. At least 75% of Chianti wines must be from the Sangiovese grape (80% in order to be Chianti Classico). The other 20% can be a mixture of other native Italian red grapes or International varieties like Cabernet and Merlot. There are also strict regulations of when these wines can be released for consumption as well as aging.
